Stanford Funky Prototype
Four Foot Buttons:
Each foot can pivot right or left to activate a button.
Left outside = crouch/prone
Left inside = sprint
Right inside = melee
Right outside = jump
Right hand:
Traditional mouse to aim, shoot, scope, and reload
Left hand:
Saitek Command Unit to move (thumbstick), grenades, killstreak, switch weapon
Backrest: Vibrations motor in the left, middle, and right. These motors were activated manually when the user was shot.
Testing:
5 users - 3 serious, 1 casual, 1 novice
Test Protocol:
Users play about 10-15 mins online on the regular PC setup, and 30-40 minutes online on the funky setup
Some key feedback:
- Foot buttons were well received, but ergonomics could be improved
- Easy and intuitive to sprint with foot
- Hard to spontaneously melee with foot
- Thumbstick is generally preferred over keyboard (WASD) for player movement - more fluid
- Funky setup is much more relaxed than the traditional PC setup on desk. People can get uncomfortable from hunching over the PC for long periods
- One user said the funky setup created a much better social environment. Felt that viewers were more engaged in the game. Viewers on the regular PC setup were kind of awkward and detached.
- Some users liked having their legs up, some would have preferred to have legs down (or the option to do either)
- Mixed reaction to backrest feedback: one user wanted more feedback, one user tuned out feedback after a while, one user got confused because it always felt like he was getting shot from the back.
- Users said they never felt restricted on the funky setup, even though they basically had to stay in the same position the whole test.

Aalto Funky Proto: Drawingboard gamepad
Our approach at the moment is a drawing board attached to hand gun type of thing.
Drawing board was second accurate pointing device after mouse so we tough that it's worth to try.
Hardcore gamers are using drawing board on a table but we decided to lift it up.
Drawing board can be switched to keyboard mode so it acts like a qwerty keyboard. We think to attach a picture of a qwerty keyboard top of the drawing board.
Hand grip contains buttons for every finger
Beside of this we are thinking to add other inputs like EMG, accelerometer but we haven't decided where to attach these other inputs so they wouldn't be uncomfortable.
